Limited English Proficiency/English Learners

The Midfield City School District will make reasonable efforts to identify children and youth who are not proficient in English Language skills. The Board will encourage their enrollment and eliminate barriers to their receiving an education which may exist in district policies or practices. The goal of the Midfield City EL Program is to provide English Language Learners (ELs) with instructional support that will enable them to participate fully in their educational experience in our schools and in their social lives in our community. The objectives of the EL program are to develop both cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP), and basic interpersonal communication skills (BICS) to develop proficiency in the language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, to encourage participation in the full range of instructional activities in the regular education curriculum and in extracurricular activities in our schools.

Midfield assesses the effectiveness of instructional support through the use of World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA's) ACCESS for EL's assessment. The WIDA ACCESS test assesses the domains of speaking, reading, listening, and writing. The ACCESS assessment is given annually each spring. In addition, assessments are ongoing during the year with summative and formative assessments within the classrooms, and formative assessments of teacher practice related to EL instruction.
