Notification of New Wireless Communication Device Policy – Alabama Focus Act

  • Dear Midfield City Schools Family,

We are writing to inform you of a new policy that will be implemented across all Midfield City Schools, following the passage of the latest Alabama state law, known as the Focus Act, 2025-386 § 16-6K and § 16-40-13 Ala—code (1975).

The Focus Act prohibits the use of wireless communication devices (such as cell phones, iPads or any other wireless device) by students during the instructional day. In compliance with this law, all schools within the Midfield City School District will begin collecting and securely storing student devices (such as cell phones, smart watches, and similar electronic items) each morning. These devices will be returned to students at the end of each school day.

This policy is being implemented to reduce distractions and support a focused, productive learning environment for all students.

A second component of the FOCUS Act will require students, prior to entering the eighth grade, to complete an online course developed by the Alabama State Department of Education. This course addresses the risks of using social media and demonstrates how to use social media safely. Students and parents will be informed about the new online course at the beginning of this school year. This online course will be completed during the school day.

Important Points for Parents and Students:

    • Devices must be turned in upon arrival at school. The devices may also be stored in a locker or vehicle for the entire school day.

    • Devices that are stored by school personnel will be placed in secure storage cases and returned to students at the end of the day.

    • Students caught possessing or using a device during the school day will be subject to disciplinary action per the Midfield City Schools Code of Conduct.

We ask for your full support and cooperation in helping us implement this law enacted by the State of Alabama and Midfield City Schools policy effectively beginning on the first day of school, Thursday, August 7. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your school’s administration or Midfield City Schools Safety Coordinator, Derrick Aikerson, via email at daikerson@midfield.k12.al.us.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting the success and well-being of our students.

    Respectfully,

    Midfield City Schools
